Out of control

I’ve got the increasing sensation that, in some ways, the scale of the internet has spiralled out of our control. Quoting James Bridle:

“…I have no idea how they can respond without shutting down the service itself, and most systems which resemble it. We have built a world which operates at scale, where human oversight is simply impossible, and no manner of inhuman oversight will counter most of the examples I’ve used in this essay.…”

Something is wrong on the internet” by James Bridle

The money/success/attention you can get on the internet fosters extreme fuck-it-all anything-goes behaviour. It’s a system ripe to be gamed. “This is content production in the age of algorithmic discovery — even if you’re a human, you have to end up impersonating the machine” ibid.

Sometimes I enjoy the coziness of the Galician www just because of the smaller scope of it all. Feels safer. Less crazy. Less wild west. Maybe it all ebbs and flows and we will big-crunch back to smaller manageable curable networks? Unlikely… tho perhaps it’d be good for us.

There’s a clear link to globalisation and cultural-economic powerhouses steamrolling their homogeneity over small actors. But it’s late. So I’ll mull over how dialing down, going local, diversifying inputs and not flocking to the mainstream may fix this and be back somewhen.
